Note 1(Chaviara-Axeskoufotos) Opened a Ralli trading branch in Leghorn (Livorno) after 1805 to circumvent trade restrictions imposed by Napoleon which affected his grain trade with Russia following Napoleon's defeat by Nelson at Trafalgar.
Note 2Sensing that trouble was brewing in the Aegean he decided to move his business and family to London (via Marseilles) - cannily anticipating that there he would be at the centre of world trade.
Note 3His sons Eustratius and Ioannis (John) were sent to London. The rest of the family were in Marseilles at the time of the Chios Massacres (apart from Ploumou who remained with her husband in Chios where he was killed by the Turks in 1822).
Note 4He has a magnificent tomb in Marseilles (see photo in TGCL). His death certificate refers to him as Etienne and his father as Jean.
