Note 1(Chaviara-Axeskoufotos) State Adviser (Privy Counsellor to the Tsar of Russia) and Russian Noble, 1881. Honoured in Odessa in 1840. Became Greek Orthodox with his mother in Marseilles in 1838.
Note 2Spent his life in Odessa. Renowned as a generous benefactor. Served in the Odessa Duma (parliament) in the 1860s. Consul for the USA 1874. Had a local reputation for hoarding large sums of gold and silver in his house. He invested heavily in property.
Note 3Presumably he was the owner of the Ralli house on Sofieskaya Street, Odessa, in which jewellery was being made and sold in 2005. Nicolas Kotzebue says he believes the nine children of Stephanos grew up there.
Note 4Vas Malkosyan records that Stepan Ivanovitch Ralli owned three stone-built houses in Odessa and 7,648 hectares at Benderes. Malkosyan also says he studied law at Paris University and became a justice of the peace and preseident ogf the Benderes council.
