Note 3I am grateful to Mme Sylvie Clair, head of the ‘Archives de Marseilles’ who revealed that François is named “Jules-Henri” on his marriage certificate although he was always known as François throughout his life (the name of his father, killed in WWl).
Note 4Was it pure coincidence that he and Fanny chose a country house retreat, surrounded by war cemeteries, probably not far from where his father died or was killed on the last day of the war?
