Note 1Served as a Lieutenant with the Imperial Yeomanry in the Boer War, taken prisoner at Lindley. Author of ‘Along The Andes’ and ‘Cashmere, Three Weeks in a Houseboat’ (1902 and 1920) about his travels in South America and India.
Note 2His life was researched by G. R. Scott (results supplied to CAL in 2005). Died at Dunedin nursing home in Reading. His grave says he was born 30 Jan 1865. His Will is held at Berkshire Record Office.
Note 3A volunteer in the Greek war of 1897 and with the Duke of Cambridge’s Special Corps in the Boer War (Queen’s Medal, three clasps). In WWl a 2nd Lt in Reserve of Officers and transferred to Hampshire Regt in 1915, serving in Mesopotamia and Persia.
Note 4One cannot help wondering how his marriage to the daughter of a baronet and a servant girl was viewed by the deeply conservative Greek community in England...
Note 5He was a ‘market gardener’ and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society.

Note 1Her tomb apparently says she was born 5 Aug 1880. Berkshire Record Office (which holds her Will) says she died at ‘Appletree’.
Note 2Either she or her sister Caroline did some beautiful paintings, including one of Nelson's flagship ‘The Victory’ at anchor just outside Portsmouth.
