Note 1Returned to Romania on his father’s death when the family bank was in difficulties because of the Great Depression and the hostility of Aristide Blank of the Banque Marmorosh.
Note 2Having restored the bank to prosperity it was liquidated following the communist takeover in 1948, ending a history of 100 years. In 1933 he established Imobiliara Chrissoveloni, a property business, which traded from 1933 to 1945.
Note 3Banque Marmorosh declared bankruptcy in 1937. He lost the house at Ghidigeni when the communists seized power in 1948. He was interrogated on three occasions, once for over 300 days in the basement of the Ministry of Interior.
Note 4Before leaving Romania in 1960 for Greece, he returned to Ghidigeni to find the kitchen table, on which Swiss bank account number was written, was gone. Paul Morand, his aunt’s second husband, helped him establish his identity with the bank.
