Note 1Established in Odessa ca. 1830. Became a Russian citizan in Odessa in 1841. Mentioned as a guild member in 1844 and 1856. Sturdza says a son, a Russian officer, died 1905 in combat against the Japanese, while another died destitute in Paris.
Note 2Known as the ‘Diamant Bleu’ according to G. M. ‘Boysie’ Zarifi. ‘Zarifi & Zafiropoulo had a bank in Odessa which was directed ca. 1830 by Alexander Zarifi’.
Note 3Profligate... allowed his Russian business to fail, squandered a fortune and made an unwise second marriage. Ended his days on a small family pension in Russia.
Note 4Apparently had many children with his second wife.

Note 1According to George L Zarifi, she was not of Alexander’s class. They had ‘many’ children and their sons were educated at George Zarifi’s expense at the Greek Commercial School of Chalki, but they did not like Constantinople and returned to Russia.
