Note 1When his parents and siblings fled Constantinople in 1821, he and his nanny were separated from his family in the chaos at the port. Forced to set sail without him, he was brought up for several years by his nanny on the island of Tinos
Note 2A family story that another child was fraudulently passed off as the long-lost son of Ioannis & Tarsi Zarifi may not be true. Reports say that he was not as bright as his siblings and readapted with difficulty to his true family.
Note 3Apparently he left a large bequest to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the bulk of his considerable fortune to the children of his wife’s sisters (per G. Vassiadis).
