NameLucas (Paul) Mavrogordato ?, 3C5R
Birthca 1816, Chios, Greece/Hellenes (probably)
MemoIf this is the Lucas P. Mavrogordato registered on Syros in 1837. But Beth McBride thinks the Lucas P. Mavrogordato who may have fathered an illegimate child was born 1810-13...
Deathca 1840
MemoDate unknown. May have died soon after 1837 according to anecdotal evidence.
Burial?
Baptism?
Residence1838, London, England
OccupationMerchant (probably in cotton)
OriginSyros and probably Chios.
Note 1Presumably the Lucas P Mavrogordato listed on a Syros census return of 1837 as a merchant of Chios, unmarried and aged 21 (ie born ca 1816) he seems to be in London in 1837.
Note 2According to Beth McBride he may have been born in Greece [Chios ?] 1810-13 and was a wool merchant [more likely cotton] in London 1830-40 where he was a British subject.
Note 3Appears he fathered a child with Ellen Melvin, the Mavrogordato family’s nurse. Their birth of a daughter Mary Ann was registered in 2nd quarter 1838 from an address in Threadneedle Street, London [Lucas’soffice?].
Note 4Tradition has it Lucas died soon after Mary Ann’s birth [is this true?] and that the Mavrogordato family found a husband for Ellen in a widower called John Farmer who settled with his new family in Chicago, USA [with financial aid from the Mavrogordatos?]
Note 5It was said by Ellen’s descendants that Lucas married Ellen at the Roman Catholic St Mary's Gate Church in London (though this seems very unlikely) and that he died soon after.

Note 1An illiterate nursery maid with the Mavrogordato family when she became pregnant with her daughter Mary Ann, probably fathered by Lucas (Paul) Mavrogordato. He may have been aged about 21 at the time.
Note 2When she was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois, John Farmer's remains were moved from the Old Cemetery in Chicago to join hers at the Calvary Cemetery.
Note 3The Mavrogordato family are said to have arranged a marriage for her with a widower John Farmer who then settled, ca. 1844, in Chicago, USA (perhaps with Mavrogordato family finance?).
Note 4She had a boarding house in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in 1855. Was this inherited by her daughter Mary Ann?
