Note 1President of First National Greek Assembly. Prime Minister of Greece (1833, 1841, 1844, 1854). Ambassador to Paris 1850-54.
Note 2In 1812 he went to the court of his uncle loannes Caradja, hospodar of Walachia, with whom he passed into exile in Russia and Italy (1817). Member of the Hetairia Philiki and among the Phanariot Greeks who hastened to the Morea in 1821.
Note 3Persuaded Byron to join the Greek cause. Met the poet Shelley in Greece in 1820 who dedicated 'Hellas' to him. Taught Mary Shelley Greek.
Note 4Leader of the ‘English’ party (in opposition to the Greek ‘French’ and ‘Russian’ parties) he was identified particularly with constitutional government.
