Note 2A celebrated observer and commentator on world politics who predicted WWI in a much quoted article published in Britain nearly two years before the war started. His 50-year correspondence with his friend Oliver W. Holmes has been published.
Note 3He married Hélène against his father’s wishes and, according to press reports, thus only received a $125,000 allowance instead of a ten times larger share in his father’s ca. $4 million estate.
