Note 1(Vlachou) Founding director and chairman of the Baltic Exchange Company, London. His fellow founders were J. H. W. Schroder and Pandia ‘Zeus’ Ralli. A member of the Finance Committee for the building of St Sophia’s church, London.
Note 2Founded The Bank of Turkey in London with William Gladstone in 1858 while among others working for the bank in Constantinople were Antoine Vlasto, J. T. Ralli and A. Mavrogordato.
Note 3He and his cousin Paul (Pandia) Rodocanachi set up the London firm of Rodocanachi Brothers Merchants in 1840. Around 1860 he founded the Imperial Bank and subsidiary property companies.
Note 4He was advised to live in Worthing because of his asthma where he bought land (presumably where his son Emmanuel built the mansion called ‘Chios’). A judge for the London International Exhibition of 1882.
Note 5According to Martin Hopkinson in 2013, a ‘Chiote library’ in Worthing (present whereabouts unknown) may have included C19th portraits of Chiots. Presumably library was linked to the Rodocanachi family living in Worthing.
