Note 1In 1892 received his first appointment, on recommendation of Professor Robinson, with the Norwich Electricity Company as resident engineer to supervise the erection of the Duke Street works and the laying of the mains in Norwich.

Note 2Fostered the domestic use of electricity and established big schemes of electrification of rural districts surrounding Norwich city. Introduced free wiring, with a fixed tariff and a small charge per unit consumed, known as the Norwich System.

Note 3As a result 28 000 out of 35 000 homes adopted electricity by 1932, when he retired and joined the Board of a Lincolnshire firm carrying out electrical development in rural areas. He was described as the most 'get-at-able' chief it was possible to have.

Note 4He served on the Council of the Incorporated Municipal Electrical Association and was its President in 1917. He assisted in the formation of the Norwich Engineering Society and served as President for a year.
