Note 2Aleco bought several paintings by his friend James Whistler: ‘Sea and Rain’, ‘Nocturne in Blue and Gold’, ‘Valparaiso Bay’, ‘Green and Grey’, ‘The Oyster Smacks, Evening’, ‘Arrangement in Grey’, ‘Portrait of the Painter’.
Note 3His portrait was painted by G. F. Watts and Legros. A group photograph shows him and five children at a five-barred gate at Homewood.
Note 4The pioneering collector of Hellenistic sculpture who “led the cult interest in Tanagra figurines which swept through the Aesthetic circle in the 1870s”.
