Note 1Described as a ‘prominent literary man’ of Montreal. He and his wife are presumably the ‘Dr & Mrs Croil’ who were guests at his daughter’s 1890 Sylvan Glen Camp? Was he the James Croil who wrote ‘Dundas: A Sketch of Canadian History’?
Note 2Was he, James (James) Croil, the James Croil who was author of ‘Steam Navigation’ (among other publications of a nautical nature) or was the author his nephew James (John) Croil?
Note 3In 1841 he joined his brother William on Croil’s Island. In 1845, he bought Crysler’s Farm (500 acres) from the Hon. Peter McGill and Joseph Shutter, of Montreal, for $6,000.
Note 4“The Crysler Farm mansion house was in need of repairs as well as the farm buildings and fences. He called his homestead “Archerfield” and later built a fine new mansion.”
Note 5Both William and his brother James were elders in the Presbyterian church at Woodlands. He was the author of numerous books including “Dundas” or “A Sketch of Canadian History”.
