Note 2George Mitchell’s service number in the Royal Canadian Air Force was 65! Accompanied the Duke of York on a tour of Canadian air bases in 1941 - shortly before the Duke was killed in an air crash.
Note 1He eventually became a Royal Flying Corps pilot in the Middle East. For a while he flew the famed Lawrence of Arabia.
Note 3Gave his name to Croil International Airport in recognition of his role in WWl, as a founder of the RCAF and for setting up and running the training schools for Allied aircrew in Canada in WWll. Cited by T. E. Lawrence in ‘The Seven Pillars of Wisdom’.
Note 4On his retirement he and his family moved from Ottawa to Vancouver.
