OccupationDoctor of medicine from Bologna University. Drogoman to the Ottoman Sultan from 1673. Much employed in negotiations with Austria. Drew up the Treaty of Karlowitz (1699). Secretary of State and Count of the Holy Roman Empire.
Note 1The variant spelling Mavrocordato (rather than Mavrogordato) is here first attributed to Alexander (for want of better evidence of its origin). Studied medicine and philosophy in Padua and wrote many scientific works.
Note 2Doctor of medicine from Bologna University. Drogoman to the Ottoman Sultan from 1673. Much employed in negotiations with Austria. Drew up the Treaty of Karlowitz (1699). Secretary of State and Count of the Holy Roman Empire.
Note 3His authority was supreme at the court of Mustapha ll along with Hussein Kupruli and Rami Pasha. He did much to ameliorate conditions for the Christians in Turkey. Argenti describes him as ‘L’Exaporite’ and a Prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1699.
Note 4Disgraced in 1703 but recalled to court by Sultan Ahmed lll. He left some historical, grammatical treatises which Britannica regards as of little value!
Note 5He started a princely branch of the Mavrocordatos family through his marriage.
Note 5Presumably he is the person at the head of a hand-drawn family tree (see Romanian state historical archives) with sons: Scarlet (no issue), Nicola/Nicholas ‘Voda’ and Jean/Ioannis ‘Voda’; + daughters: Elena/Helen and Roxandra.
